Well folks, 'Your Pal Slim: Songs of James Hand' h

Well folks, 'Your Pal Slim: Songs of James Hand' has now been out for over two weeks, and I've been bowled over by the response.

Some might say this is a niche album, but it was also a labour of love. It's very gratifying that so many people seem to share that love for the music of James Hand, or have been drawn to it by this release.

I'm gonna share some photos in my stories (because they don't come out right in this post) of the magnificent players who contributed to the record and graced stages alongside 'Slim'. Their musicianship and entanglement in the legend of James Hand made this album what it is.

Thanks to Chris McElrath, Jake Penrod, Brennen Leigh and Beth Chrisman - not forgetting the vital foundations laid by Anna Robinson and Robert Pokorny.

As James would've said - Thank you a lot!

Some of you will know that I've been using @vocalz

Some of you will know that I've been using @vocalzonehq on stage for some time now (not chewing tobacco, as is a common misconception...). I lost my voice during a show in 2019, and not only did it take a long time to recover, but my voice was left feeling fragile even after that. I started using VZ on a recommendation, and then was schooled further on it by my pals @smithandbrewer ...

It took a while, but I eventually found what worked best for me: I use the sugar-free blackcurrant pastilles as I find them less overpowering, and have gauged how many I roughly need per show. They strengthen my voice and ultimately give me a lot more control over a typical 90 minute set. These days I wouldn't feel remotely confident going on stage without them.

I'm glad to be a VZ Artist under the Vocalzone Endorsement Network. As you can see, they are also encouraging me to get to grips with VZ tea, which I intend to do!

If you're a singer (with vocal issues or otherwise) or just someone who uses their voice a lot, I can't recommend Vocalzone highly enough.

I can't think of a more important figure in my mus

I can't think of a more important figure in my musical career than Duncan Warwick, who died on Sunday. As the editor of @cmpcountry , he held a lot of power over whether a newcomer (especially a British one) would be taken seriously by longtime fans and, indeed, other publications.

Fortunately for me, he loved my first album and made sure people knew it. Almost immediately, he started to reference my music as a yardstick for other British artists to be judged by - both generously and often. CMP was and is the longest running country music magazine in the world (and remains somewhat of a bible-zine for those of us who hold the genre dear), and as a UK artist being featured in it was vital.

I've lost count of the number of times he featured or mentioned me in the magazine. This was dreamland stuff for someone who had read CMP religiously for years before I even played live, taking virtually every recommendation that was offered.

That brings me to Duncan's great gift - the ability to see beyond hype, PR and budgets and get to the music. It's impossible to name every artist his reviews introduced me to, but ones I still treasure include Chuck Cusimano, @sayhowdyscott and Bobby Dale.

He was a champion of real country music and even dabbled in promoting shows at one point. He and his wonderful partner Kelly put on a gig for @jeremypinnell and I on our UK run - a night and a tour I will never forget. Jeremy is a great friend to me, and I know being in Duncan and Kelly's company felt like home away from home for us both.

I'm not sure how UK country music fills the hole that Duncan leaves behind. I guess the best way is to follow his lead: keep searching for the gems under the surface, keep blowing the horn for those who need a louder signal. Duncan had a great understanding of how the UK scene changed, but what is good and deserving of a spotlight will never change much, and so he stayed his course.

I look forward to CMP continuing to live on, and I wish everyone who sails on that ship the very best. But that aside, I'll miss my friend, and hold that familiar regret that I wish I'd seen him more and known him better.

RIP Kristofferson. One of the great sages of our time...a virtually peerless songwriter who also happened to be fiendishly handsome and a superb actor. The envy of mere mortals everywhere. I say 'virtually' peerless as Kris himself heralded Dylan as the very best the one time I was fortunate enough to see him perform.

I remember a newspaper review of that show singling out this song for ridicule...it became one of my favorites from that moment.

We've lost another of the irreplaceable ones, folks.

A year ago I was in the heart of what would be a benchmark European tour, opening for @charleycrockett This photo is from the Shepherd's Bush Empire date - still the biggest show I've ever played.

I've said before that playing traditional country music in the UK and Europe is tough because there is only a very small established market for it. Guys like Charley are bringing it to a new, younger crowd though and it offers light at the end of the tunnel to those of us who must carve out our own paths in order to travel at all.

In unrelated news, I recently noticed that my song 'I Hope You're Unhappy' has passed 100,000 streams on Spotify. Guess there are ears for this stuff after all. Thanks for listening, folks.

Well folks, I'm proud to say my new album of James

Well folks, I'm proud to say my new album of James Hand covers 'Your Pal Slim: Songs of James Hand' will be released this November!

As many of you know, James Hand's music has been a huge influence on me and played a pivotal role in my country music education. I have been working on this album since 2020 - truth be told I started planning it the day James died in June that year. There were a few bumps to traverse and it took time to wrangle all the contributors that I wanted to be part of it, all of which just makes me more glad to be able to get it out there now.

The album features James's last permanent guitar player and bandleader Chris McElrath on guitars, as well as contributions from superb artists @jake.penrod , @brennenleigh and @bethchrisman , all of whom played with and loved James Hand. Many people helped along the way, and I am humbled to have had the blessing of the James Hand family to record this album.
